Inner Side
Glass joins the fragments into a new whole, preserving a map of change on its surface.
Explore the seriesWorks
Alena Antonova’s work explores glass memory, fragility and transformation. Her interaction with the medium becomes a game of “act and freeze.” “Act” is the shaping of an object: working with molten glass and setting it in motion. “Freeze” is cooling, when the material comes to rest and the transformation is fixed.
The objects that emerge from these experiments reflect on the nature of things—an attempt to reveal hidden meanings and reconsider the world around us.

Inner Side
“Inner Side” conveys the fragility of the world around us and an attempt to gather into a whole what is falling apart. The glass surface bears imprints of broken plaster molds once used in the studio to produce editioned objects.
Each shard is selected and laid like a piece of mosaic. As the glass sets, it joins the fragments into a new whole, literally recording a “map of change” on its surface.

The contrast between glossy seams and a matte surface turns the cracks into channels resembling electrical discharges.
View the workIn these objects, the plaster mold generates crack patterns as it heats up, becoming a co-author of the texture that the glass captures on its surface as it is blown.
